  19. All revisions of SuperStor 2.0 are known to be compatible with DR
  20. DOS 5.0 and DR DOS 6.0 operating systems.  A sound knowledge base
  21. of both DR DOS and SuperStor 2.0 is recommended before attempting
  22. any of the below tips.  Please call Addstor, Inc. at 415-688-0465
  23. for additional information regarding SuperStor 2.0 specific
  24. problems.

  26. UPGRADING FROM MS-DOS 4 OR 5 TO DR DOS 6
  27.  
  28. Scenario #1: Entire C: drive is compressed and does not swap with
  29. another drive. Copy the DOS file ATTRIB.EXE to a plain bootable
  30. system floppy.  Put this floppy in the A: drive and reboot the
  31. system.  Use the ATTRIB command to remove the (S)ystem and (H)idden
  32. attributes from the file SSPARTSS.ADD on the C: drive.
  33.  
  34. This command would be: ATTRIB -S -H SSPARTSS.ADD
  35.  
  36. Rename this file to SSPARTSS.SWP.  Reassign the (S)ystem and
  37. (H)idden attributes to the file SSPARTSS.SWP on the C: drive.
  38.  
  39. This command would be: ATTRIB +S +H SSPARTSS.SWP
  40.  
  41. Reboot the system from the DR DOS Install disk.  DR DOS should load
  42. and swap the SuperStor drive.  Install DR DOS normally.  DO NOT
  43. REBOOT FROM THE HARD DISK UPON COMPLETION OF THE DR DOS INSTALL. 
  44. Once again, boot from the bootable system floppy which was made
  45. earlier.  Copy the files SSTORDRV.SYS and DEVSWAP.COM from the
  46. SuperStor 2.0 Program Disk to the root directory of the C: drive. 
  47. Remove the floppy from the A: drive.  Reboot the system.  Your
  48. upgrade is complete.
  49.  
  50. NOTE: it is possible to return to a non-swap configuration with
  51. SuperStor.  This may be done by simply removing the (S)ystem and
  52. (H)idden attributes from the file SSPARTSS.SWP on the swapped
  53. uncompressed partition.
  54.  
  55. This command would be: ATTRIB -S -H SSPARTSS.SWP
  56.  
  57. Then, rename the file SSPARTSS.SWP to SSPARTSS.ADD.  Reassign the
  58. (S)ystem and (H)idden attributes to the file SSPARTSS.ADD on the
  59. swapped uncompressed partition.  Reboot the system.  The SuperStor
  60. drive should no longer swap with an uncompressed partition.
  61.  
  62. NOTE: Items in AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS, such as DISKMAP, may
  63. still be referencing the swap drive.  Updates should be made to
  64. AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS to delete any references to the
  65. previously created swap drive.
  66.  
  67. Scenario #2: C: drive is uncompressed or swaps with another drive.
  68.  
  69. Boot from the DR DOS install disk.  Install DR DOS normally.  After
  70. installing DR DOS, format a plain DR DOS system floppy in your A:
  71. drive.  Reboot the system with the system disk in the A: drive. 
  72. Copy the files SSTORDRV.SYS and DEVSWAP.COM form your SuperStor
  73. program disk to the root directory of the C: drive.  Remove the
  74. floppy from the A: drive.  Reboot the system.  Your upgrade is
  75. complete.

  77. RECOMMENDED METHOD FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPRESSIONS (hard disk)
  78.  
  79. 1. Create a plain DR DOS system floppy.  
  80.  
  81. NOTE: this may be done by formatting a disk in the A: drive with
  82. the FORMAT A: /S command.  Or one may use FORMAT A: to format a
  83. disk in the A: drive and SYS A: to transfer the system files to the
  84. diskette.          
  85.  
  86. 2. Create a CONFIG.SYS on this DR DOS system floppy.  This
  87. CONFIG.SYS should include:
  88.  
  89.    FILES=20 
  90.    BUFFERS=20  
  91.    DEVICE=\SSTORDRV.SYS
  92.    DEVICE=\DEVSWAP.COM
  93.   
  94. 3. Create a AUTOEXEC.BAT on this DR DOS system floppy.  This
  95. AUTOEXEC.BAT should include:
  96.  
  97.    PATH=A:\;C:\;C:\ADDSTOR    
  98.    PROMPT $P$G
  99.  
  100.    NOTE: the subdirectory on your C: drive where SuperStor 2.0 is
  101. kept may have a name other than "ADDSTOR".
  102.  
  103. 4. Boot from this DR DOS system floppy.  
  104.  
  105. 5. From the A: prompt, run the SSTOR.EXE floppy and continue with
  106. the SuperStor 2.0 instructions for compressing a hard disk. 
  107.  
  108. NOTE: this procedure is recommended as no TSRs or device drivers
  109. will be allowed to interfere with the compression process.
  110.  
  111. DISKOPT AND SUPERSTOR 2.0
  112.  
  113. It is NOT recommended that DR DOS 6.0's DISKOPT be used on a
  114. SuperStor 2.0 disk drive.  DR DOS 6.0's DISKOPT has not been
  115. verified with SuperStor 2.0, and therefore may cause undeterminable
  116. results.  AddStor supplies their own disk optimization utility with
  117. SuperStor 2.0 which MAY be used to optimize the SuperStor 2.0
  118. compressed drive.

  120. RECOMPRESS
  121.  
  122. SuperStor 2.0 contains an advanced compression utility called
  123. Recompress which "improves the data compression of a SuperStor Disk
  124. by up to 25%."  The use of Recompress, on a drive created with DR
  125. DOS's release of SuperStor, is NOT recommended.  There are known
  126. problems between SuperStor 2.x's Recompress and DR DOS's release of
  127. SuperStor. Addstor is aware of the situation and is working on a
  128. solution.
